I very much identify with your post, as well as with significant points in other posts. It is a disease, because a disease is a biomedically determined cluster of (again biomedically defined/approved) symptoms for which a (biomedically designated) pathology or prognosis is applied/expected. Being sick is different from feeling ill because we can convince other people that we are in a deviant/abnormal/undesirable temporary/permanent life state. Its important for managing work/living/relationships that we can convince them - what is a sick day vs a holiday if we cant for example? Disease is a life state with specific conditions attached (cluster of symptoms, prognosis etc) that means we can convince powerful medical professionals (and lots of other folks and ourselves!) that what we experience is real, is less temporary than sick and (usually) not under our own control. Each type of state - ill, sick or diseased comes along with important consequences for our self-esteem, thoughts and feelings and for the way others treat us, as well as for our pockets and life choices. What we subjectively/emotionally/bodily experience is only a part of the 'illness' or sickness or disease. Depression may be a highly reasonable reaction to an uninspiring and unhealthy life position, or it may be a baffling result of a tormented consciousness, a temporary, permanent or transient experience of misery. Managing physical symptoms such as pain can also follow this pattern. If an asprin doesn't cure all pains, anti-depressants wont soothe all minds. Nor does any other treatment work for any condition in isolation. Sometimes asking people what they need is best, sometimes its worst. Sometimes people need to talk, sometimes they need to exercise and move into new circumstances to get better, sometimes the pain is such that they don't have the faith in a different ending anymore. But putting people into boxes will fail most people, especially if they, as people and as a group, haven't designed the box themselves.

... really it is. Times are moving on, things are beginning to change, and this is a good thing, really it is. As the year starts to draw to a close, my mind starts to reflect on the last 12 months or so. 24 months... 36 months.... Time slips by, quick and slow changes, some no changes. And although it makes no scene, it doesn't matter. It's all as it should be, and I feel a seismic shift in the ground under me, there is going to be some changes soon, and it can only be a good thing if done carefully and tip-toed into.

Birthdays = depressing. I look back and it scares the shit out of me what I've done with it all to end up here. I read old journal entries either online or on paper and nothing ever really changes. Put the current date in and it is as reliant today as it was back when. What does this say - that I don't change for whatever reason??? So today I'm making a plan. Looking forward with bite size manageable chunks to do to turn it all around. 4>44 (foward at 44) it what I'd market this as if I were promoting a business. I'm very aware that I'm not there yet, where ever there is. And time and youth is now against me. I've drifted away from this blogging thing, partly because I felt uncomfortable with the world being able to read my thoughts and angst (for want of another word) and partly because I'd lost my regular readership (I know, I can't have it both ways)
Or can I?
This way, by restricting public access, I can.It can become an online but private diary where I can work out the things that are bouncing around in my head, a hidden scrapbook that is hopefully even more secure then a tatty old exercise book hidden in the top drawer.
It can become my muse, safe knowing that the secrets are secrets and I can't be judged for the demons that haunt me.

Instead of hunting for someone to talk with and open up to, I can do it here...

The email I sent to Neil Gaiman - one of 217 he received from all over....

From Twitter and then the blogs, I've been following the progress of the little cat called Zoe from Neil Gaiman and Olga. And it has been making my eyes water, your writing has brought back memories of loss. But not a small, lame, blind cat. Of a dog. Called Emmy.

I'd got her 3rd hand, she was as mad as a hatter. When she first saw me she adopted me. I had no choice in the decision. She ignored everyone else, and was just focused on me 100%. Pure devotion, forgiveness and love, and I pledged then that i would look after her and give her the best life I could, after the horrible start she'd had, The first few years of her life where she's been chained up, and then rescued and left to run wild. The time that had made her as mad as a hatter.

Personal relationships came and went but Emmy the dog was a constant. If the latest woman didn't like Emmy the dog, then the woman didn't last very long. I changed jobs and moved, but always with the interests of Emmy in the forefront of my mind. If I could get a job where she could come along with me, then I did. I turned down well paid, interesting, career jobs. I stopped traveling overseas, and took all my holidays around the UK. Emmy went everywhere. She slept in my room, on a sofa where I could hear her breathing. It was a comfort. As she got older, she went into her basket as she tended to fall off the sofa. At seventeen and a half the vet said she was being to fail, and gave her six months. I quit my job to be with her, and looked after her like she was a baby. Never forgetting about her bad start to life, and the unconditional love she had given me and the help she'd given me in the dark times. She slowly failed, got weaker, had kidney failure, her immune system gave up, and she became a shadow of the girl she had been. She died on New Years Day 2008 40 minutes into the day, at the grand old age of 18 years old. She now looks down on me from a little box on the window, keeping a beady eye on me - watching over me.

So from a story of a Cocker Spanial called Emmy I know and understand why Olga traveled so far for a small cat called Zoe, understand why you spent the night giving comfort and warmth regardless to your allegories for a small cat called Zoe, understand why she has four legs and not three legs, understand why you moved a bath to find her.

These things make us human, and if more people were like this, many of the worlds problems would be healed.

My thoughts are with you and Olga. And I'm sure there's a mad as a hatter golden Cocker waiting to befriend and show around a small blind lame cat new to the place where the sun always shines and it's always warm and there is always a hand to tickle behind an ear when needed.......

318 miles to go on the old car before it gets to 160,000. and what do I do? I leave the lights on, and kill the battery. Dead. So it's on a slow charge to see it that helps. Later in the week it's going on it's final journey to Somerset, where I'm giving it away. I don't think I'm going to see it turn over the 160,000, which is a shame.

I found a new secondhand car on Thursday and picked it up today. very odd driving a different car for the first time during a heavy rain storm going through a city I don't really know very well. We took Berty to the family field to bury him on a hill, near a bench. The family field is a field that was purchased about 18 years ago by 'C's' family, and has since been turned into a small patch of semi wild woodland. We go in and sort out the dead wood, and manage the trees a couple of times a year, but for the most, it's left alone for the trees and wildlife. It's a peaceful and beautiful place.

Berty was C's dog, and I was only in his life for the last year or so, but losing him is still so, so sad.

This photo caught my eye as we were looking for the right spot, with the contrast of colour and the mushrooms.

This little video was shot at Powder Mountain, a ski area in northern Utah. Pow mow flies below the radar as far as utah resorts are concerned, which is fine by me! This place is all about getting your pow turn on with your buddies, all day.

Shot on a 5DmkII, handheld, with a 15mm fisheye. Tried to capture the feeling of shredding a resort on a typical utah pow day.

When for a walk down to the Strangles today, and saw this fellow in a rock pool. I have no idea what kind of starfish he is, but he was a fine looking chap! If anyone can shed some light as to what family he belongs too, I'd be grateful. He seemed to be translucent / transparent and has, as you can see, five arms.
